“The team at Optimum Perinatal are simply the best! They are always so friendly and go above and beyond for their patients needs. Corina is most definitely an expert in her field and I would trust her with the care of everyone in my life. Hands down this is the place to be for any pelvic or perinatal needs!”

L.R. Pelvic & perinatal

“I can't recommend Corina enough! She is incredibly friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and accommodating. From the very first appointment, she made me feel comfortable and supported. She is extremely thorough in her teaching and takes the time to explain everything in a way that's easy to understand. I've learned so much from her about my pelvic floor and overall health—things I never even knew before! Corina truly cares about her patients, listens attentively, and ensures every session is tailored to your needs. She goes above and beyond, and I'm so grateful for the guidance and support she's given me.”

R.C. Pelvic health

“What a beautiful combination of expertise and care. Thank you for making women's health such a clear priority. In what can often feel like a vulnerable and uncertain experience (seeking help for womens health concerns), I felt genuinely safe, respected, and well-informed. I'm so grateful for the support and compassion shown throughout my care. Thank you.”

K.D. Women's health

“This has been my favorite healthcare provider through out my pregnancy!! I saw Lisa a few times prior to pregnancy as well. And during pregnancy I've seen both Gina and Lisa and every session is soooo informative”

C.G. Prenatal care

“Corina is exceptional. She is incredibly knowledgeable, but also kind. She genuinely cares and really makes the most of the appointments we have together. She has been absolutely instrumental in helping me navigate a serious pelvic floor injury from a traumatic birth. Not only physically, but emotionally too by empowering me and reassuring me every step of the way. I am so grateful I found her and couldn't recommend her more highly.”

J.K. Postnatal recovery

“I cannot recommend Optimum Perinatal Health—and especially Gina-Marie—highly enough. I first saw her before the birth of my daughter and continued working with her during my postpartum recovery. She is an exceptional pelvic floor physiotherapist: kind, compassionate, professional, and incredibly communicative. Gina-Marie has a way of making you feel completely at ease while also being honest, encouraging, and deeply supportive. Each visit felt like a gift—truly worth its weight in gold—and was transformative for me during my postpartum journey. Even now, five years after giving birth, I returned to Gina-Marie for a re-evaluation of my pelvic floor and abdominal health, and once again, the experience was incredibly helpful and grounding. Her care and expertise have made such a difference in my life. If you're considering pelvic floor physiotherapy at any stage, I wholeheartedly recommend Gina-Marie and the team at Optimum Perinatal Health.”

M.H. Postpartum recovery

“Dr. Corina is very knowledgeable, communicative and thorough. She listens intently and has been able to source the root of my current issues and provided the necessary detailed instructions / methodology to remedy the ongoing issues. I am so grateful I was referred to her by a fellow practitioner that had gone to the clinic years ago. I absolutely would recommend, clean & friendly space, easy to get to and, for something that is so personal and, to many, nerve-wracking, I was very quickly made to be comfortable and at ease.”

C.F. Pelvic health

“As a health care professional, I had only heard of pelvic floor PT. And it sounded scary. My regret, not meeting Corrina sooner. I feel my world has changed for the good even at my age.”

P.G. Pelvic floor PT

“I can't recommend Gina-Marie enough! She's incredibly knowledgeable and made me feel comfortable right away. I really appreciated how she sent me summaries of each session in a shared document—having everything written down made it so much easier to revisit her advice. Her birth prep class was a huge help during labor, and now that I've seen her for a postnatal assessment, I'm confident that her guidance will make a big difference in my long-term health. If you're looking for a great pelvic floor physio, she's the one!”

I. Birth prep & postnatal

“Today was my second session with Dr. Ashley Duguid, i am really grateful to have booked physiotherapy for pelvic pain with her, she is very understanding and very helpful also explained everything so wonderfully. I wish her more success and happiness☺️”

D.D. Pelvic pain

“I started seeing Corina a year postpartum as my pelvic floor prolapse and other symptoms were not resolving as I had hoped.”

E.G. Postnatal recovery

“Corina was very professional, knowledgeable and took the time to get a detailed history as well as teaching me the exercises. I highly recommend any woman to go to this clinic.”

J.H. Pelvic health

“I have never had a positive experience at a physiotherapist until now. Corina was life changing. She helped me with the round ligament pain, when my pubic bone separated, then taught me how use my muscles properly for pushing in labour. I would recommend her to everyone! My labour was completely different! Way less pushing, way less tearing. Overall a way faster recovery! She is so professional and she listens to your concerns and really takes time to help I never felt rushed. Thank you!”

C.S. Birth prep

“Gina is super thorough and an expert at her profession. She makes you feel genuinely cared for and is exceptionally nice. Very optimistic my problems will be resolved with my continuation with her sessions.”

J.R. Pelvic health

“Really impressed with Ashley and her knowledge. I felt like I was in good hands and highly recommend her to anyone expecting. I personally had hip pain and didn't know it was connected to my pelvic floor health and she gave me ways to improve it.”

A.T. Prenatal care

“This review is long overdue. Corina is one of the most incredible health practitioners I have met in my life. I was referred to her by a friend to address debilitating prenatal hip pain.”

J.L. Prenatal care

“I first met Corina about 14 years ago - I was referred to her for pelvic organ prolapse secondary to a rare condition I had just received a diagnosis for. While working on that issue, I underwent bowel surgery as well as multiple hip surgeries for which I saw both Corina and Gina for over the years when they worked at the other clinic. They have always been amazing. Because of them, my pelvic organ prolapse improved so much that I've been able to avoid surgery which had seemed inevitable initially. My symptoms are completely manageable now which has improved my quality of life significantly. These ladies are truly amazing. They are always learning more, staying current on the most recent research and treatments, and have more knowledge about my rare condition than any other health care professional I've met. I recommend both of them to anyone - even as a preventative measure during pregnancy as they are a wealth of knowledge. I would trust ANY of the ladies at Optimum.”

She has such a wonderful way of making you feel comfortable, supported and each time my issue has been solved with her suggested interventions! I recommend Gina and Lisa to everyone I know that's expecting a child or experiencing any pelvic issues!”

C.R. Pelvic health

K.M. Postpartum recovery

“Friendly welcoming, direct billing and Ashely was kind, knowledgeable and friendly. Great experience!”

C.L. First visit

“I went yesterday, to see Gina due to a very sore tailbone that had been plaguing me for about a year. The chiropractor was able to help but only temporarily and has always needed several visits to make much of a difference. I had pain both sitting and moving into a standing position and was starting to feel the inflammation when walking as well. I was nervous because I really didn't know what to expect. Gina is so professional and with her own admission, talks a lot which really helps a person relax. Although I could definitely feel the muscles which she had worked, I had no pain sitting or getting up when I left her office. She also says that I should not require any additional visits. She assessed the way I walk, sit and stand and provided suggestions to help. I am so impressed and would like to say that if anyone is hesitating, don't. It really helps and she is an excellent practitioner.”

B.W. Pelvic health

“Great experience with Dr. Lisa. She made me feel heard and comfortable, thank you!”

B.F. Pregnancy & postpartum

“Lisa is the best! I wish I knew this place in my first pregnancy. I did not know the term "pelvic floor" before my midwife told me about it in my second pregnancy when I struggled with walking and leaking... Lisa advised me so much and my symptoms improved drastically. Highly recommend this place!”

G.L. Pelvic health

“I did the prenatal program with Corina and Gina and had extensive postnatal care with Gina. All of the women at Optimum have been very knowledgeable and their interventions have been very effective for me. I have recommended them to everyone I know who is pregnant.”

M.K. Prenatal & postnatal

“I am a physiotherapist and I absolutely refer all my pre/postnatal clients to Gina or Corina. They are so passionate, professional, caring and really just hands down the best in their field. There is nothing better you can do for your body during this challenging time then to book in for a consult. Even if you think everything is going well, it is 100 percent worth checking in before and after baby! I guarantee you will come away feeling better and having learned a ton : )”

K.W. Pelvic health

J.B. Pelvic health

“Ashley was amazing. She was very professional and well educated. Very helpful, and kind. I'll be back.”

B.H. First visit

“I have had an outstanding experience working with Lisa throughout my third trimester and now postpartum. She is very knowledgeable and listens to all of my concerns with empathy. Her treatment plans are excellent. I would definitely recommend an assessment to anyone who is pregnant or postpartum!”

N.S. Prenatal & postnatal

“I have seen Gina multiple times for various pelvic floor issues. She has such a wonderful way of making you feel comfortable, supported and each time my issue has been solved with her suggested interventions! I recommend Gina and Lisa to everyone I know that's expecting a child or experiencing any pelvic issues!”

Questions, Answered

The things everyone asks

Every question we get, gathered in one place, from referrals and coverage to assessments, the pessary clinic and pediatric care.

Booking & your first visit

Do I need a doctor's referral to book?
No. Physiotherapy is a direct-access profession, so you can book without a referral. Some extended-health plans do ask for one to reimburse you, so it's worth checking your policy.
What happens during a first appointment?
We start with a thorough conversation about your history and goals, followed by an assessment. Together we build a plan that fits your body, your stage and your comfort level. First visits usually run 45 to 60 minutes.

What should I wear to my first appointment?
Please wear something you're comfortable moving around in. We recommend something stretchy and comfortable.
Do I need to reschedule if I have my period?
No, you don't have to reschedule. You can attend while on your period, and there's no reason we can't perform a pelvic exam while you're menstruating if you're comfortable with it. The only times we avoid a pelvic exam are with a UTI or yeast infection, if there are other precautions noted by your doctor or midwife, or if you're uncomfortable.

Pelvic exams & assessment

What is an internal pelvic health physiotherapy exam?
An internal vaginal and/or rectal examination assesses the strength and function of your pelvic floor and pelvic organs, and the position of your tailbone. The gold standard for assessing these muscles is an exam performed with one gloved finger inserted into the vaginal or rectal canal. Our physiotherapists are trained in both internal and external evaluation and treatment.
Do I have to have an internal exam?
No. An internal exam is not a requirement, though it gives us the most information about how the pelvic floor muscles are functioning. If you're uncomfortable with one, a lot can still be assessed by observing and palpating the pelvic floor externally. It's always optional and only ever done with your informed consent.

Does an internal pelvic exam hurt?
Our physiotherapists fully explain and communicate with you throughout your examination. If you feel any discomfort or pain, it's important to tell us so we can keep your exam comfortable. We continuously check in with you, and you can decline or stop assessment or treatment at any time.
What conditions can pelvic health physiotherapy treat?
A wide range, including pelvic floor dysfunction (stress incontinence, urgency and frequency, painful intercourse, constipation, and faecal or gas incontinence), pelvic organ prolapse, diastasis rectus abdominis (abdominal separation), loss of strength or function during pregnancy and postpartum, and back, pelvis, tailbone, neck and shoulder pain during pregnancy and postpartum.

Pregnancy & postpartum

Is it really safe to start physiotherapy while I'm pregnant?
Yes. Prenatal physiotherapy is one of the best things you can do to prepare for birth and manage the aches of a changing body. It's safe and tailored to each trimester.
When in my pregnancy should I come in?
Our prenatal assessment is a one-hour pelvic health assessment with a registered women's pelvic health physiotherapist, available for any woman in her 2nd trimester or beyond.
See 3 more Show fewer
How soon after birth can I start postnatal physio?
Our postnatal assessment is appropriate for any woman who has had her 6-week postnatal checkup. Gentle early guidance can begin sooner, and a full pelvic assessment is typically appropriate once you've been cleared.
It's been years since I had my baby. Is it too late?
It's never too late. The postnatal assessment is appropriate for any woman experiencing pelvic floor symptoms, no matter how long ago you had your baby.
Can you help with abdominal separation or returning to running?
Yes. We assess for abdominal separation (diastasis) and pelvic floor concerns, and guide a safe return to exercise, running and the activities you love.

Perimenopause & menopause

Can pelvic health physiotherapy help with menopause symptoms?
Yes. As estrogen levels shift and decline, many women notice new joint aches, morning stiffness, changes in bladder control or a new sense of pelvic pressure. Our registered pelvic health physiotherapists bridge orthopedic care and pelvic wellness, treating your body as a whole so you can move through the transition with confidence.
It's been years since my body went through menopause. Is it too late for pelvic floor physiotherapy?
It's never too late. Our general pelvic health assessments are appropriate for any woman experiencing pelvic floor or orthopedic symptoms, no matter how long ago your menopausal transition occurred. Your body is always capable of healing, adapting and getting stronger.

What menopause-related concerns do you treat?
Stress urinary incontinence, urgency and frequency, chronic constipation, estrogen-driven joint pain and stiffness, hip, low back and tailbone instability, pelvic pressure, heaviness or laxity, painful intercourse, and loss of core and hip strength.
Is a pessary an option during or after menopause?
Often, yes. Pessaries suit women of all ages who need extra support to reduce symptoms and stay active, including those navigating perimenopausal or menopausal changes, post-hysterectomy, or seeking a non-surgical option for prolapse.

Pessary clinic

What exactly is a pessary?
A pessary is a removable, soft silicone device worn inside the vagina to support the vaginal space, a bit like a sports bra for your pelvic floor. They come in many shapes and sizes to suit your anatomy and symptoms.
Do I need to see my doctor before a fitting?
Yes. Your family doctor completes a Physician Pessary Referral Form confirming it's safe for you to be fitted and that your vaginal tissues are healthy. They may also prescribe vaginal estrogen, recommended for 6 weeks before your fitting.

Who are pessaries for?
Women of all ages who need extra support to reduce symptoms and stay active, including those postpartum with heaviness or leakage, navigating perimenopausal or menopausal changes, post-hysterectomy, or seeking a non-surgical option for prolapse.
How do I book a fitting?

Pediatric care

What ages do you see?
We see infants and toddlers (0–2), children and teens (3–17), and offer pediatric pelvic health for ages 5–18.
Can physiotherapy really help with bedwetting or constipation?
Yes. Pediatric pelvic health physiotherapy can help children with bedwetting, daytime accidents, bowel or bladder leakage, constipation and other pelvic-related concerns.

My child has a developmental concern. Can you help?
We support children with concerns such as plagiocephaly, torticollis, low tone, toe walking, gait concerns, and delays in motor milestones like rolling, sitting, crawling and walking.
Will it be comfortable for my child?
Our care is gentle, child-friendly and family-centred. With experience at the Stollery and Glenrose hospitals, we're comfortable supporting children with a wide range of needs and complexities.

Is pelvic floor physiotherapy covered by insurance?
